On 20 October, the European Commission presented its vision for fisheries and aquaculture towards 2040, addressing the future of the sector and the local communities that depend on it.

Priorities include the energy transition, innovation, access to finance and support for small-scale fisheries. The Commission also points to digital traceability throughout the supply chain by 2029 and a blue generational renewal strategy planned for 2027.

Sustainability and economic prospects

The roadmap distinguishes an initial phase, until 2030, focused on energy efficiency and technological development, followed by the wider deployment of zero-emission technologies. It also highlights income diversification and stronger training provision.

A topic for coastal communities

For local authorities in maritime areas, the vision offers a reference for considering the links between productive activities, skills and resource protection. Within the cooperation promoted by Focus Europe ETS, exchanges between communities can help share experience and identify common needs.

This is a European strategic direction, rather than the announcement of an open funding call. Any funding opportunities will need to be checked against subsequent measures and programmes.
