Art, culture and active citizenship will be at the heart of the first transnational event of the European Radical Green project, dedicated to the role of young people in building more sustainable, inclusive and resilient communities.

Valletta will host the Festival on Youth Engagement for a Radical Green Europe, the first transnational event of the European project Radical Green – Increasing citizen’s participation in the green transition through art performances and cultural initiatives, funded under the CERV – Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme.

Coordinated by the Valletta Local Council, the project brings together partners from Malta, Italy, Albania, France and Belgium, with the aim of strengthening young people’s democratic participation in the green transition through art, culture, creativity and dialogue among local communities, institutions and cultural organisations.

Radical Green focuses in particular on young people aged 18 to 30, who will be involved in the creation of a European Climate Action Community together with artists, designers, cultural experts, local authorities, schools, associations and youth organisations. The project promotes new forms of civic engagement and highlights the role of local communities in developing sustainable solutions at both local and European level.

The Valletta Festival will take place over two days. The first day will include conferences, round tables and workshops on the relationship between art, culture and the green transition, with the active participation of young people and representatives of the project partners. The second day will take the form of a cultural festival, featuring artistic performances, exhibitions, participatory workshops and a collective symbolic action to promote environmental sustainability.

Focus Europe ETS is a partner of Radical Green and will contribute to strengthening dialogue among territories, young people and European institutions. The organisation will also lead the activities planned in Caltagirone, where a European call for young artists and a European Common Action on sustainability through artistic and participatory practices will be promoted.

Over its 21-month duration, Radical Green will implement six in-person transnational events and develop shared tools including a digital gallery, an interactive map of artworks created with recycled materials, an eco-gadget collection, a multimedia art knowledge bank, a projectable digital art exhibition and the Radical Green Pact, a final document gathering tools and guidelines to enhance youth involvement in sustainable regeneration processes.

By connecting cities, young people, artists and institutions, Radical Green aims to contribute to a more participatory, concrete and community-based green transition, in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus and with European priorities on sustainability, active citizenship and local governance.
