With the membership of the Ayuntamiento de Alcaraz, Focus Europe ETS expands its international network and strengthens its presence in the western Mediterranean, including through the strategic work of its Malaga office.

A new member of the Focus Europe ETS network confirms the value of an increasingly European and Mediterranean vision of cooperation between local authorities. The Ayuntamiento de Alcaraz, a historic municipality in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, has formalised its membership of Focus Europe ETS – The Network of European Territories, consolidating an institutional relationship already established through the European town-twinning project “Trame Gemelle – TWIN LOOMS”, led by the Municipality of Sarule under the European Union’s CERV programme.

Alcaraz joining the network marks a highly significant step in the growth of the Focus Europe ETS network. It is more than a new membership: it clearly demonstrates the association’s ability to build stable, credible relationships focused on developing projects with local authorities in different European countries, placing territorial identities, institutional cooperation and the promotion of cultural heritage at the centre.

Alcaraz is a community with deep historical and craft traditions, particularly renowned for producing the celebrated “Alfombras de Alcaraz”, which express a textile heritage of considerable value and naturally connect with the Sardinian tradition of “sa burra” in Sarule. This cultural affinity and a shared desire to turn local heritage into a means of promoting European citizenship gave rise to the TWIN LOOMS project, an initiative funded by the European Union under the CERV-2025-CITIZENS-TOWN-TT call, dedicated to town twinning.

Alcaraz’s membership of Focus Europe ETS further strengthens this process, showing how European projects can generate more than temporary activities: they can create lasting institutional ties that lead to new collaborations, a stable presence within transnational networks and a broader strategic outlook for the territories involved.

For Focus Europe ETS, this new membership is also particularly important from a geopolitical and territorial perspective. Alcaraz’s presence in the network helps to further extend the association’s reach in the western Mediterranean, strengthening the connection between Italy and Spain and confirming the central importance of an approach based on cooperation between local authorities as a driving force for European integration.

Within this framework, the work carried out through the Malaga office also has strategic significance. This office is a key Focus Europe ETS presence for relations with the Iberian and Mediterranean context. The Spanish office is an increasingly significant point of connection for developing partnerships, engaging with local authorities and launching projects that look towards Europe and also towards the Mediterranean as a natural space for encounters, exchanges and shared growth.

Alcaraz joining the network thus confirms Focus Europe ETS’s ability to act as a true infrastructure for relationships between territories, connecting municipalities, institutions and communities around shared objectives: access to European funding, the development of international partnerships, the promotion of local identities and the strengthening of European citizenship.

Over the years, Focus Europe ETS has consolidated its role as a point of reference for local authorities, associations and institutions interested in developing high-quality European projects, providing support with the development of ideas, partnership building, applications, management and the promotion of results. The network’s growth is more than quantitative: it reflects a clear approach, creating a stable space for cooperation in which territories can find common ground, engage in dialogue and build new opportunities together.

The membership of the Ayuntamiento de Alcaraz is fully aligned with this direction. It demonstrates how the work of Focus Europe ETS is now recognised, including beyond national borders, as an effective means of supporting territories through a practical process of internationalisation, rooted in communities and capable of producing tangible results.

With Alcaraz, the network gains a new voice, a new experience of local administration and cultural heritage of outstanding significance. It strengthens a strategic connection bringing together Sardinia, Spain and the Mediterranean in a shared vision of Europe: a Europe made up of towns, communities, living relationships and projects capable of turning local traditions into resources for the future.

Alcaraz joining Focus Europe ETS is therefore not an endpoint, but a new beginning. It is a step forward in consolidating a network that continues to expand, strengthen its quality and build bridges between European territories, looking towards ever broader and more structured cooperation.
